Deal Whale threw us for a bit of a loop, but after a self-imposed code ban we’re feeling on track again. We’ve even got some crowdsourced logos up for voting.
As part of the process for designing a logo for Deal Whale, we decided to put together a 99 designs contest and source some design ideas via a guaranteed $150 contest. It sounds innocent enough, and the exact first step you might expect from a company founded on the concept of crowdsourcing. But as it turns out, we weren’t crowdsourcing at all. We were “exploitsourcing”. And it’s a damn touchy subject.
I read a nice article by Glenn Kelman this morning about what he learned at Starbucks’ Annual Meeting.
For some reason, after reading through the entire thing the one phrase that was in my mind was “put your passion in your products.”
For both Howard and Glenn as CEOs, their “product” is their company and everything that includes – employees, customers, coffee, selling houses – everything from top to bottom. In order to build a successful company (read, product), passion is necessary to persevere.
For a developer, the product is much clearer, but the need for passion is the same. Continue reading…
