The engine running this should eventually grow to be a little bit smart, blocking groups of items that go together, e.g., 'Lost' should also block out the names of the characters involved, 'Boston Red Socks' should also match 'Red Socks', 'socks', as well as the name of the team they're playing, all of which should be able to be deduced from the general noise of Twitter.
Possibilities:
A grease-monkey script that hooks the twitter web app's api calls, tagging matched tweet's wrapper divs with a css class that sets foreground and background colors to match, or just to make the wrapper of the tweet disappear entirely.
A filtered API proxy that respects the caller's settings (so that other apps can integrate the tool, the users of which bear the price)
This can be monetized on a tiered system akin to Netflix, where you pay $1/month for one filter-at-a-time, $2/month for two filters-at-a-time, etc., with a convenient 2-week free trial per twitter account that is subscribing.
I know I would gladly set up a recurring $2/month payment. There's nearly always at least a couple things I'd like to filter out, even if it's only follow friday.

Can't watch the game live? Don't want to find out any spoilers before you can watch it on your DVR? Mute one or more topics from your stream
Sometimes I just don't want to hear about a particular topic, whether it's a game that I can't watch live because of a scheduling conflict, or a suspenseful tv show that airs first on the east coast. Find a way to mute a topic from my stream.
